Electronics retailer Ceconomy wants to expand the online business of its MediaMarkt and Saturn brands. It is planned to expand the online market offer with third-party providers and launch in other countries.
MediaMarkt and Saturn plan a new offensive on the Internet and in the market: According to a report by Wirtschaftswoche, Ceconomy CEO Karsten Wildberger wants to significantly expand the online business of the two brands. The next target is an e-commerce share of 30 percent of all sales — the share was recently 25 percent.
Potential in retail media trade
The plan is to expand the online market offer with third-party providers and launch it in other countries, which will allow to simplify the company’s own scale and reduce costly warehousing. At the end of 2022, the retailer had around 900 retailers with a total of 700,000 products on the platform. Wildberger also sees potential in the retail media business.
“We don’t lose sight of the issues of costs, profitability and liquidity,” says Wildberger’s letter. “We expand our product range without taking product risk ourselves.”
The electronics retailer managed to capitalize on its Christmas 2022 business; Sales rose to around 7.1 billion euros. However, operating profit decreased due to higher costs. Ceconomy expects slight sales growth for the current year.
